Palace On Wheels Tour

The palace on wheels (POW) has graced the Rajasthan Tourism and the Indian Railways since January 1982. The Rajasthan tourism Development corporation, The Indian Railways, the Tourism department of Rajasthan and the Government of India launched POW as a special heritage tourist train for providing a unique and memorable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan.

The concept of the palace on wheels was derived from the royal background of the coaches which were originally meant to be the personal railway coaches of erstwhile rulers of the princely states of Rajputa.

The History of the Palace on Wheels
The train was built for the former Indian royalty and comprised of personal coaches of the rulers of the princely states of Gujarat and Rajputana, the Viceroy of British India and the Nizam of Hyderabad. In the early 1980s, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation, together with the Indian Railways decided on a special train to offer people a taste of the Indian and foreigners Today, the Palace on Wheels is the most promoted product by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

The Royal Treatment
The Palace on Wheels maintains an imperial style and décor. The train and its facilities are synonymous with the epitome of luxury.

The Quaint Environs
Palace on Wheels and the facilities on board the train are marked by affluence and exuberance. The train is self-sufficient with all the modern amenities. However, the décor speaks of the culturally rich past of Rajasthan. The paintings, carved furniture and elegant handicrafts are represent Rajasthan's fascinating heritage of art and craftsmanship. Period furniture and the elaborate costumes of the attendants make up the royal ambience.

Bar
The train is fully air-conditioned. There are fourteen deluxe saloons named after the princely states of Rajasthan. Each saloon has 4 cabins attached with bath and shower. Personal attendants make sure that you are well looked after. The music in every saloon adds to the ambience. There are 2 dining cars, decorated in the colorful Rajasthani style and serving Indian, Rajasthani, Continental and Chinese food.

The bar is well-stocked with Indian liquor and a variety of scotch, wines and cocktails. Kids are kept busy with interesting indoor games. Other services include laundry services, doctor-on-call at each station, barber shop and beauty parlour. The lounge has a charming shop, "The Bazaar", where you can pick up souvenirs and gifts.

Day 03: Jaisalmer
Founded by Rawal Jaisal in the twelfth century, Jaisalmer evokes a vivid picture of sheer magic and brilliance of the desert and is today one of Rajasthan's best-loved tourist destinations. The yellow sandstone fort is an imposing sight, towering majestically over the city. The nearby shifting sand dunes of Sam remind you of Sahara Desert.. The Patwon ki Haveli is a must on any traveller's itinerary. It is the most elaborate and impressive mansion in Jaisalmer. The three-hundred-year-old mansion, Salim Singh ki Haveli, is another beautiful structure. Also visit the Gadsisar Sagar Tank (a tranquil lake surrounded by lovely shrines) and the three Jain temples (with beautiful carvings).

Day 04: Jodhpur
Famous for its rock-solid Mehrangarh Fort built in mid 15th century by Rao Jodha, the founder of the city, Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan., the old Jodhpur city is surrounded by a 10 Km long wall with eight gates serving as entrances and the new city is settled around this walled area. Jodhpur houses grand palaces like the Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and the Phool Mahal. In these exquisite palaces, forts, temples and havelis, the genius of its sculptors comes to life and stand as a testimony to the imperial grandeur of the city.

Day 05: Morning: Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambhor)
Sawai Madhopur plays host to the Ranthambor wildlife sanctuary that houses the Indian tiger. It is the best place to see these majestic predators in their normal pursuits. The park is also home to 300 species of birds and hyena, ratel, jackal and fox among other species. There are Lake Palaces, chhatris, old fortifications and a majestic 1,000-year-old fort overlooking the park. The lovely Jogi Mahal is located at the foot of the fort and gives magnificent view of the Padam Talao, painted white with water lilies.

Day 06: Udaipur

The two most famous lakes are Pichola and Udai Sagar. The city also has beautiful palaces, the Jag Niwas (Lake Palace), and the Jag Mandir,. Udaipur is also famous for its miniature paintings.
