Jaipur, the vibrant
capital of Rajasthan, is popularly known as the 'Pink City' because
of the pink-colored buildings in its old city. It sits on a dry lake
bed in a somewhat arid landscape, surrounded by barren hills
surmounted by forts and crenellated walls. This buzzing metropolis
is certainly a place of wild contrasts and a feast for the eyes.
Jaipur has long outstripped the confines of its city wall and is
today among the most tumultuous and polluted places in Rajasthan.
Despite this, it seldom disappoints the first-time visitor. The city
owes its name, its foundation and its careful planning to the great
warrior - astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh II (1693-1743).
In 1728 Maharaja Jai Singh II built the remarkable observatory
(Jantar - Mantar) which is still one of Jaipur's main attractions.
The walled old city is in the north-east of jaipur, the new part
parts spread to the south and west. The main tourist attractions are
in the old city. The principal shopping centre in the old city is
johari bazaar, the jewellers' market. Unlike most other shopping
centre in narrow alleys in India and else where in Asia, this one is
broad and open.
Jaipur is famous as pink city and also because it is capital of
Rajasthan. Jaipur was built o pink stucco in imitation of sandstone
and the city is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the
width and regularity of its streets.
jaipur was founded in 1743, 16 year after Jersus father Jose
Tieffenthalar wrote "The city, while it is neew, is assuredly the
most beautiful among the ancient cities of India, because in the
latter everything is old the streets are unequal and narrow. This on
the contrary has the splendor of the modern, with equal wide and
long streets."
Jaipur is considered as the best planned city & Rajasthan's most
popular tourist destinations. Jaipur forms the southwest corner of
India's 'Golden Triangle' joining ranks with Delhi & Agra. The seat
of both Rajput splendour and modern urban squalor, jaipuris
extraordinary bawaars, forts, and elegant architecture, assail the
imagination while its throbbing polluted streets and ruthless touts
assault the senses.
The city was born out of the vision and prudent urban planning of
the 18th century Rajput leader Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who ruled
the region from 1699 to 1744.Having established political stability
in his territories by the mid1720's Jai Singh decided to move the
capital from its hillside fort in Amber. With the help of renowned
Bengali Architect Violyadhan Chakravati, the maharaja built the
walled city of Jaipur, carefully lying out Jaipur according to the
Mathematical grid Model of the ancient Hindu map of the universe.
High Walls were constructed for defense and entrances to stores and
homes were placed on side streets so that royal processions could
pass without disrupting daily life.Wide streets and sidewalks were
designed to p pedestrian traffic and a complex system of underground
aqueducts brought drinking water to the fortified city.
The British presence during the 19th Century brought about a drastic
cosmetic transformation to celebrate PrinceAlbert's visit in
1856,the city painted itself pink. The city was dubbed " The Pink
city" and both the name and the colorwash struck. Though the city
has lost its pink hue much of the splendour remains-from the |
